Overall, Germany is the most competitive European country on the App Store and Google Play daily download charts. The next one is the UK, which has only been overtaken by Germany in the past few years.
Although Germany is almost the most competitive market in Europe, the results vary by category. In the App Store, France is the most competitive country in the social sector, while the UK leads the way in sports and health and fitness.
On Google Play, Germany acquires the top spot in the Social, Shopping, and Health & Fitness categories, while Italy is the most competitive in the Sports category.
In the food and beverage category of the App Store, Germany and the UK are the most competitive countries. On Google Play, the UK needs to drive more downloads to reach the top spot than the German and French apps.
In Asia, we found that Japan was consistently the most competitive country in the App Store, but India was more competitive in the Google Play Store, leading in all categories we surveyed.
In all the categories shown above - education, finance, food and drink, health and fitness - there is only one example where Japan or India are almost surpassed. For an app that ranks in the top two in the App Store's finance category, South Korea has less than 1k downloads after Japan.
Brazil is by far the most competitive market in South America across all categories in app stores and Play stores.
On the App Store and Google Play, Brazil has 2 to 7 times more daily downloads in any category than South America's second most competitive country. In terms of overall market share, Brazil accounts for 50% to 70% of downloads in both South American app stores.
If we remove Brazil from the analysis, we find that Colombia is the second country in terms of App Store competitiveness. Several countries are competing for the highest downloads to reach the top of Google Play. For example, in the Shopping category on Android, Colombia, Argentina and Chile are the most downloaded countries.
In the Photography category of the App Store, Colombia is the leader in downloads, followed by Chile and Peru. Compared to Colombia, the photo app has less than half as many downloads in other countries. When it comes to Google Play, the most competitive market is still Colombia, although Argentina is a very close competitor and is only slightly behind Colombia in the number one spot.
Then we looked at some very large markets, which tend to be more App Store (US) or Play Store (Brazil and India). As expected, across all categories, we found the US to be the most competitive country in the App Store, and mostly India in the Play Store. We did find some additional insights worth sharing.
One of the only categories in Health & fitness, where Brazil needs more downloads to top the Google Play charts than India.
In the food & beverage category, India is by far the most competitive market for the Play Store. It requires apps to have higher daily downloads to reach a status comparable to Brazil and the US. However, in Brazil, your app needs to be No. 1 or No. 2 in that category in daily downloads, not suddenly No. 5. This sudden increase was mainly due to the app iFood, which accounted for 27% of total downloads in the food & beverage category on Android in Brazil.
In the Sports category, the Indian market is the most competitive. In India, it takes an estimated 87,000 downloads per day to be No. 1 in the sports category of a game store (30,000 in Brazil and 13,000 in the US). This is mainly due to the major popularity of apps such as Rooter, IPL, and Cricbuzz, which occupy the top spots.
