Apple released iOS 17.5 Beta 1, featuring a large update size, new web sideloading in the EU, and various other enhancements across the Apple ecosystem in UK.

The new beta release, with a build number of 21F5048F and weighing in at 6.48 GB, suggests a full OS reinstall—typical for transitions from public to beta versions. It also includes a modem update that aims to enhance connectivity, addressing issues reported by users.
Even though the distribution is web-based, these apps must still adhere to Apple's stringent notarization guidelines to ensure user safety. Additionally, developers are required to register their website domain with App Store Connect.
Developers will also have access to APIs for system functionality integration.

Upon initial boot-up, some users noted a greeting displaying their Apple ID. The battery settings now include a 'charging time title,' although some coding errors have been spotted, likely to be rectified in subsequent betas.
The Books app now features a progress counter for reading goals, and the Podcasts app's widget color will match the content being played, reintroducing a user-favorite aesthetic touch.
Within the privacy and security settings, a new glyph icon has been added next to the 'Pass Keys access for web browsers' option, providing a visual update.

Despite the new additions, some features like live activities for the stopwatch and the Apple Music SharePlay option have not been included in this beta.
The dynamic Island animation for the stopwatch, previewed in earlier betas, is still missing. Additionally, a bug has been spotted in the battery settings where placeholder text appears instead of the usual options.
The release schedule for iOS 17.5 Beta 2 is expected to be bi-weekly, with the final release likely in May, possibly coinciding with the launch of new iPad models.
With the introduction of iOS 17.5 Beta 1, Apple is paving the way for more flexible app distribution in the EU and addressing various system aspects.
The update, while not groundbreaking, sets the stage for further enhancements and aligns with Apple's incremental update strategy.
Users in the EU, in particular, may find the new sideloading option a significant shift in app installation practices.
