2023 saw remarkable growth in the global AI application market. In 2024, this momentum has continued, with revenue for the first eight months rising by 51% year-on-year to reach $2 billion. Annual revenue for 2024 is projected to reach $3.3 billion.
Following the rapid growth of 2023, the AI application market has matured significantly in 2024. From January to August, global AI app revenue rose by 51% to $2 billion, with projections indicating an annual total of $3.3 billion.
North America remains the main revenue driver, contributing 47% of total revenue, while India leads in download numbers, accounting for 21% of global downloads.
OpenAI's ChatGPT continues to dominate the global AI app market. From January to August 2024, it was downloaded over 160 million times, generating nearly $230 million in revenue. By August, cumulative revenue exceeded $270 million, with more than 190 million monthly active users.
Bending Spoons’ image editing app Remini, known for AI avatar creation and clay filters, ranked second with over 120 million downloads. Its cumulative downloads reached 450 million, with in-app purchases exceeding $200 million.
New entrants such as Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Chatbot AI & Smart Assistant have also made an impact, ranking fourth, eighth, and ninth, respectively. ByteDance's chatbot Doubao is the only Chinese AI app in the top five downloads, with other apps like Hypic and Gauth also appearing in the top 30.
2023 witnessed a substantial rise in AI+Chatbot apps, with downloads increasing fourteenfold compared to 2022, approaching 600 million. In the first eight months of 2024, downloads have already exceeded 630 million, surpassing the total for 2023.
In-app revenue for AI+Chatbot applications reached $580 million, more than 1.5 times the total revenue of 2023.
Emotional companion AI apps have gained traction, particularly among younger audiences. Character AI led this segment with 22 million monthly active users in August 2024 and nearly 19 million downloads from January to August. Talkie AI followed with 17 million downloads, outperforming Character AI in the U.S. market.
These companion apps are especially popular among users aged 18–35, with Character AI boasting 66% of its user base in the 18–24 age group.
Gender preferences differ: Character AI and Talkie AI appeal more to female users, while Linky AI and HiWaifu attract a higher proportion of male users.
The AI app market continues to thrive, led by strong performances from ChatGPT and Remini. The growth in AI+Chatbot apps and the rise of emotional companion AI applications demonstrate an evolving market and increasing user engagement.
With significant revenue and download growth, the AI app market is well-positioned for further expansion.
