Fairly Trained introduces a certification for AI models that use copyrighted material with permission, marking an industry shift towards ethical AI development practices amidst increasing legal scrutiny in UK.
In an industry grappling with the ethical and legal implications of AI development, Fairly Trained emerges as a new player aiming to certify AI models that lawfully utilize copyrighted material. This initiative reflects a growing concern over AI's compliance with copyright laws and the need for transparency in training data sources.
Fairly Trained, led by Ed Newton-Rex, former VP of audio at Stability AI, has introduced the Licensed Model certification. This label is designated for AI companies that obtain explicit permission to use copyrighted training data, signaling a commitment to respecting creators' rights.
Notably, Fairly Trained will not certify companies that rely solely on the fair use doctrine for training their AI models.
The move to certify AI models comes amidst a backdrop of legal disputes, including high-profile lawsuits against AI firms by artists, authors, and media organizations like The New York Times. These lawsuits allege copyright infringement in the training of generative AI models, highlighting the tension between AI innovation and intellectual property rights.
With potential legislation on the horizon, which may mandate AI companies to disclose training data sources, Fairly Trained's certification could become a critical tool for AI developers. It provides a means to demonstrate compliance and potentially avoid legal entanglements while fostering trust with content creators and the public.
Fairly Trained has already accredited nine companies specializing in image, music, and voice generation AI. These early adopters could set a precedent for ethical AI development practices, encouraging others in the industry to follow suit.
